Abstract

Business Model (BM) aggregates processes, activities, resources, and extensive networks of play-ers which enable companies to define and implement their strategy. As BMs play a crucial role in organizational success, there has been an increase in how BMs can be innovated. Nowadays there are two main drivers that affect BM innovation, i.e., suitability focus and digitalization. Concern-ing the former, indeed there are pressing ‘grand challenges’ that the society is facing, i.e., open-ended global objectives such as secure, clean, and efficient energy production. Therefore, organi-zations’ attention is cantered not only on economic performance but also on the social and envi-ronmental pillars of sustainability. In addition, the emergence of digital technologies and the in-creasing digitalization of the general public have been revolutionizing society and its equilibrium in recent years. In such a turbulent context companies need to develop BMs that take into account digitalization and sustainability focuses in order to create and capture value. The outcomes of the qualitative research conducted highlight how digitalization can favour companies to achieve inno-vative and sustainable BMs benefiting all the stakeholders.
