Increasingly many organizations work on the interplay between permanent and temporary organizing, whose governance is still insufficiently understood. Through a qualitative inquiry of the Venice Biennale, this study explores the governance interface between the permanent owner organization and temporary project organizations in the form of festivals and exhibitions. The study uncovers the role of organizational identity –intended as one of governance capabilities of the permanent owner organization –and other facilitating factors in the governance interface. It contributes to the project organizing literature, the literature on organizational identity and broader organization studies.
