Abstract

After the 9/11 a growing tension shapes the relation between the West and the Islamic country. War on terrorism has imposed on Media a stronger attention to facts and events connected to the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine. Any violent act of disobedience is judged under the label of terrorism. Such an approach has widened the gap of mutual comprehension between the Western culture and the Islamic one. The Media are playing a major role in paving the way to a clash of civilizations. Images of violence and death prevail on the screen of the satellite televisions both in Europe and in Middle East. This article present European and Oriental philosopher opinions in promoting dialoghe to create a virtuous trend for a peaceful coexistence. Daisaku Ikeda has recently warned against the risk of ignoring the humanity of the enemy. Many scholars (Appiah) have stressed the need to improve the knowledge of other cultures, in order to enrich ourselves and our societies with new ideas. A correct translation (Ortega y Gasset) can help promoting a better knowledge of the different civilizzations. We need to see things from other's poin of view (Jaspers) if we intend to settle difficult relations among different groups of people. In these late years different groups of people, facing injustice and economical difficulties, have turned to a narrow minded conception of identity as an answer to the increasing fear and distress. According to Amartya Sen, poverty is a major problem in intercultural conflicts, but there cannot be economical progress without freedom. Lack of freedom and justice are real obstacles in the promotion of dialoghe, but also prejudices and mistrust. To this last problem Arab poets (Adonis, Darwish) are intellectuals answers inviting everybody to open the heart and to accept plurality and respect for every human being.
