It is a comprehensive review of Italian literature on the performance of public organizations, withe regard to several approaches: business science, psychology, social and political science. There is also a section on public policy. Most of the literature is didactic and normative. Empirical analyses of the actual use of performance improvement instruments, on the whole, are lacking.
