This paper examines the effects of network structure on performance in cooperative and highly regulated settings, where the behavior of actors is influenced by the regulatory constraints. We test our hypotheses in a cooperative network of 115 clinical research projects carried out in the pharmaceutical industry. We find that in cooperative settings ego-network centrality has a negative effect on a project’s performance. Furthermore, we found that centrality moderates egonetwork density, and the effects of institutional constraints.
