This chapter maps the relation between immigration and nationalism in neoliberal societies, which are shaped by market fundamentalism and globalization. I distinguish between two different types of nationalism, a populist protest variant that is reactive to neoliberal globalization; and a statist variant that has taken on elements of neoliberalism itself. Throughout, the chapter circles around the tricky question of distinguishing “liberal” from “neoliberal”, as separate political organizing principles and forms of nationalism.

Abstract
This chapter maps the relation between immigration and nationalism in neoliberal societies, which are shaped by market fundamentalism and globalization. I distinguish between two different types of nationalism, a populist protest variant that is reactive to neoliberal globalization; and a statist variant that has taken on elements of neoliberalism itself. Throughout, the chapter circles around the tricky question of distinguishing “liberal” from “neoliberal”, as separate political organizing principles and forms of nationalism.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
