This article explores the extent to which the European Union (EU) influences the definition of the city as a legal-political entity. It argues affirmatively that the EU plays a notable role in this process. The article first clarifies the relevant definition of a city (par. 2). It then tests this thesis by examining the historical context (par. 3) and exploring the concept of a discernible European urban policy or an EU policy on urban law (par. 4). Finally, it highlights the significance of European jurisprudence concerning urban matters in addressing the research question (par. 5). By analyzing these factors, the article reveals the EU’s contribution to shaping the understanding of the city as both a legal and a political entity.
