The decade since the terrorist attacks of September 1 Ith, 2001, has been eventful and controversial for US foreign policy, both in its making and its consé quences. Within ten years the United States has journeyed from post-Cold War confi dence through the 'War on Terror', the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the 'trans formational' moment of Barack Obama's élection, the killing of Osama Bin Laden and onward to new politicai and military entanglements in North Africa. This essay aims to undertake a realistic and rétrospective assessment of the George W. Bush s foreign policy, highlighting the fil rouge that connects the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 to the recent démocratie révolutions in North Africa and Middle East.
