The essay is centred on the behaviour of the Italian liberals during the political crisis of July 1960. It is concerned with three different kinds of liberals: Giovanni Malagodi, secretary general of the Liberal Party, who aimed at preventing an alliance between Christian Democrats and Socialists; Cesare Merzagora, President of the Italian Senate, who was critical of the growing control of political parties on public institutions; and the magazine "Il Mondo", which espoused a progressive brand of liberalism and vehemently opposed Malagodi as well as Merzagora.
