The USA has been using secondary sanctions for decades amplify the effect of their primary sanctions. This type of sanction aims to deter foreign individuals abroad from engaging or continuing business contacts with targets of unilateral US primary sanctions. This article examines the extent to which this practice is legally permissible under the principles of jurisdiction in international law. Firstly, the concept of secondary sanctions is defined. Secondly, the article gives an overview of the history of secondary sanctions. Thirdly, the principles of jurisdiction are applied to secondary sanctions. The author concludes that access restrictions based on the principle of territoriality are legally permissible under international law, whereas all other secondary sanctions violate international law.

Abstract
