The contribution aims at commenting the first steps of the electoral campaign for the next European Parliament elections of 6-9 June 2024 in order to verify the functioning of the “constitutional convention” on the so-called Spitzenkandidaten mechanism, attempted to democratize the choice of the President of the European Commission, and its effects on the EU “form of government”. Notwithstanding its failure after the 2019 elections, the mechanism seems still alive, although according to different interpretations adopted by each European political party.
