This brief text looks at the evidence which justifies referring to Africa as 'an emerging continent', for example, its enormous potential in terms of market development and the wealth of foreign capital being currently invested; its close cooperation with the European Union in the area of governance; and its vast territory and cultural and linguistic diversity. It then focuses on the role of African women in promoting, guiding and sustaining this transition, touching on their participation both at an everyday level as workers and heads of families, and at an national and international level as innovators, entrepreneurs, defenders of human rights and political leaders. It then defines the objective of the Conference and outlines the connections between the various themes that are dealt with.
